Family Recipes - Sweet and Sour Meat Loaf

My husband and I both have some pretty amazing cooks in our families, all of whom have very diverse cooking styles. This inspired me to start a blog series where I will occasionally feature a family member's recipe with an interview. A couple of weeks ago my sister had us over for dinner and she agreed to let me feature this recipe.

What are you making? Sweet and Sour Meat Loaves

Can we get the recipe?
Meat Loaves:
2 lb. hamburger                    1/4 tsp. pepper
1 1/2 tsp. salt                       3/4 c. cracker crumbs
1 egg                                  1/2 of the sauce
1/2 small onion, chopped

Sauce:
1/2 (20 oz.) can crushed pineapple           1/3 c. brown sugar
1 c. catsup                                             1 TBS. mustard
1/4 c. vinegar

Directions: Mix all of the meat loaf ingredients in a large bowl, along with 1/2 the sauce. Make individual portions by using 1/2 to 3/4 cup of meat per loaf. Place meat loaves in a greased 9x13 pan and pour remaining sauce over loaves. Bake @ 350* for 1 hour.

How would you describe your cooking style? Tried and True - I like to make the recipes that I know are going to be good...I'm not one to venture out and try new and weird foods, although I give a lot of credit to those who do!

Where do you find most of your recipes? Our church's Dutch Delights [cookbooks]...this is where you'll find REAL home cooking!

If you had to eat out, where would you choose? It would be a toss up between Panera Bread and Logan's Steakhouse...the two are very different, but both have excellent food!

I tried it and I love it. I'm officially hooked.

Every afternoon for the past few weeks I've made myself a berry, banana, and spinach (!?) smoothie. (I heard about it from Jenna, who heard about it from Janel.) I know it sounds less than appealing, but really the spinach is pretty much tasteless and it doesn't make the smoothie look as gross as I thought it would. What a great way to get those dark leafy greens every day!

Here's how I make mine (and of course smoothies can be very easily manipulated):

-frozen blueberries

-frozen raspberries

-1 banana

orange juice (amount depends on how thick/smooth you want it)

-1 large handful of baby spinach

Blend until smooth!

Christmas Cards - What to do with 'em

I always hate pitching all the lovely photo cards we get each Christmas. I recently came across a great idea on Apartment Therapy that turns your photo cards into a cute little book. I pinned it so I could find it later, and put the idea to use today.

Pretty fun, huh? I hope to start a collection of these little "books" over the years. I think it would be fun to get them out every once in awhile to see how the people in the cards have changed.

*Rings available in the office section of any big-box retail store. Use a paper punch to make the holes.

Sweet Potato Chili

It's nearly dead of winter and I'm already tired of the same old cold weather recipes. I went on the hunt for some revamps of my winter stamples and found this glorious new (to me) take on chili.

I found the Cookie + Kate blog whilst pinning one day and that's where I found this Vegetarian Sweet Potato Chili recipe. It's super hearty, uses cocoa powder and cinnamon, and if you let it simmer long enough the sweet potatoes take on all the flavors of the chili. It became and instant favorite for us and I decided it was definitely share-worthy. Head on over to the Cookie + Kate blog for the recipe.

Horses

We took a little road trip this weekend to visit grandparents. Grandma lives in the city. Grandpa lives in the boondocks. I love each place equally as much. I love the energy and the excitement in the city, and I love the way I instantly revert back to my country girl self in the boondocks.

Grandpa has horses and horses rank #1 on my favorite animals list. (Dogs are a close #2). I could literally spend hours out by the fence, talking to them and petting their noses. I kind of get lost in my own little world.

I was really excited to show Little Miss the horsies. She suprised us and was not at all scared of them. She loved touching their noses. Like mamma like daughter I suppose.

Fabric shopping

A great question came up in the comments section the other day. It was,

"...Do you design your own fabrics or do you buy them from somewhere? If so, where do you buy from?"

To answer the first part, no, I do not design my own fabric. (I would, however, love to do that someday!)

I do buy my fabric, and am generally pretty picky about where it comes from. I try to stay away from a certain big box fabric store (starts with a "J" and rhymes with "Boann's") as much as possible when shopping for fabric. Not because I'm afraid of quality or anything, but mainly because I have a short list of favorite fabric designers - none of which can be found at said store. (Plus the whole take a number and wait thing really stretches my patience.)

So I guess I should back up and share my favorite designer list: Amy Butler, Heather Bailey, and Joel Dewberry. (I told you it was short!) If you see me using a boldly colored and printed fabric, there's a 90% chance it's from one of these three designers.

Here are my favorite places to buy them:
Etsy (Change the search box drop-down to "supplies" and enter the designer's name or specific fabric. You'll see fabric from several different shops and it's a great way to search for the lowest price.)
Fabric.com (All of my italian linen and dupioni silk comes from here. You can also find a lot of designer fabrics at this website. They have free shipping for orders over $35 and a really great return policy - which is important since you can't see in person the fabric you're about to buy.)

Another great place to find fabric is in your closet or at thrift stores. For crafting purposes, I'm finding this is my favorite way to have unique textures and patterns in my projects. For instance if I have a shirt that no longer fits right, I cut out the applique or whatever I like about it and repurpose it.

So if you've got a project in the pipeline and have been looking around for some great fabric, I hope this helps!

Resolution

It all started several months ago when I realized I had so much scrap fabric that I was getting overwhelmed. I'm a recovering fabric addict, and believe me I've got a stash. So I started picking out all of the "warm" colored fabrics and cut them into squares. I was going to make a quilt. Until I realized all of my freshly cut squares totaled well over 100. I was back to feeling overwhelmed...and was really no closer to putting some of my scrap stash to good use. Eventually my would-be quilt landed in the bottom of a shoebox and has been stored away for the past several months.

Yesterday I was doing a bit of organizing and came across my squares again. After staring at them for awhile I thought to myself, "What if I tackled this project, but over the course of the year?" Maybe it was seeing all of the glorious patterns and colors again that got me excited, but I decided it was totally do-able. So I now have another resolution to add to my list: FINISH THAT QUILT!

New Year and a project

Happy New Year everyone! What a whirlwind the past couple of weeks have been! I love the holidays but man oh man I am ready for some normalcy! Tomorrow starts a week of *hopefully* on-schedule naps and meal times and sanity. I was never much of a schedule person before I became a parent...but it's incredible how one missed nap can rock your world.
I have some ideas for the blog this year, including some do-it-yourself projects, recipe projects, and home improvement projects. Nothing too big, but hopefully enough to satisfy my creative drive.

Today I'm going to post my first DIY project: a bookmark. I have a modest stack of books I'd like to get through this year, and I'm going to need a good (and cute!) bookmark to get me through. I really love the flag bunting that seems to be all over the place right now and it is what inspired this bookmark.

First you will need to gather these supplies:
-a piece of heavy kraft paper or cardboard cut to whatever size you'd like your bookmark to be
-a page or two torn from an old book (I used part of a reference section)
-thread
-needle or sewing machine
-japanese masking tape, stickers, or other decoration
-a pen
-a Sharpie pen
-a ruler
-glue

First you will want to use your ruler to draw out diamond shapes over your book page. Make sure to draw on the back side of the page.

Cut out your triangles and pick out the best looking ones.

Secure the triangles in place with a small amount of glue. Be sure to put glue on just the bottom tip, not the whole piece.

Get out the sewing machine and stitch down the tops of the triangles. The triangles should now look like flags or pennants on a strand. You could also use a needle and hand stitch. I stitched my first line and wanted a little more substance, so I went back over it again a second time.

If you are using tape, cut a notch into each end of a small piece and adhere to the kraft paper.

I'm a doodler, so I just made a quick little design on top of the tape. Other alternatives would be writing an inspiring word or your name.

And that's it! Now you have an adorable bookmark to use every time you pick up your book.

I have a terrible habit of starting more than one book at a time...so maybe I should go make a few more!

Boring-est Post

Ah! I did get a new planner for my 2012 schedule...

I typically buy a very plain, minimalist calendar every year. This year I was brave and picked something bold. Must have been the extra shot of espresso in my coffee. Who wants to bet I'm sick of the pattern by March?

Aaaaannnddd....now I'm taking bets over a planner. A sure sign that it's time to end this post.

No, really, I actually do love brown paper packages tied in pretty string. Pretty packaging makes my heart go pitter-patter.

I've been working hard at tying up all of my brown paper packages...err...wrapping Christmas presents this year, and I'm loving the results!

I purchased all of my pretty string at The Gilded Bee on Etsy. (Caution: if you're like me you may drool upon seeing this shop!) I bought my brown kraft paper in the shipping isle of my local big box store.

The tragedy? We have decided against a Christmas tree this year, (I've got a baby who pulls on everything) so there is no pretty place to display all my pretty packages. For now, they are on small table behind the couch next to the nativity so we can enjoy them until they are gifted.

I'm pretty sure brown packages with pretty string will become a tradition in the years to come. Hopefully Little Miss will enjoy this stuff as much as I do and we can make it our thing. At least until I inevitably become "uncool". (Which had better be a long time from now!)

Table Talk

My 8 month old recently discovered that she can pull the tablecloth down to the floor. And subsequently everything on the table comes down with it.

Excuse me, Little Miss, but that tablecloth is there for a reason. Momma doesn't exactly love that...um..."vintage" table top. But since I cannot speak baby language and you cannot speak momma language...the tablecloth's got to go.

You know, vintage is very in right now. (Just keep telling yourself that, momma!)

PS - Correction on the chocolate dipped clementines post: after thinking about it (and confirming it with Brooke), the idea for those was born after I popped a piece of chocolate and a clementine slice into my mouth at the same time. I happened to be at Brooke's at the time, and then my brain just jumbled it all together. My apologies! So if you make them and hate them...no blaming Brooke!

Chocolate Dipped Clementines

For all our sakes, I promise this is not turning into a food blog. I'm not really that great of a cook. But I love being in the kitchen, food is fun to photograph, and it's just that time of year, you know?

A good friend of mine, Brooke, first introduced me to chocolate dipped clementines at a Christmas party a few years back. Ever since, I absolutely have not been able to resist making them around the holidays. Here's how to make them, according to Vanessa (aka - totally made up, no recipe followed):

Start by placing wax paper on an appetizer plate. Peel and separate 3 - 4 clementines. Place 1.5 - 2 cups chocolate chips in a small pan over the stove. *Note: Treat yourself and use good chocolate. It doesn't really matter if you use milk/dark, just go with the good stuff.* Heat the chips over medium-low heat stirring frequently, if not constantly. Once the chocolate is good and melted remove the pan from the heat and dip your citrus slices. Place the clementines on the wax paper. When the chocolate starts to thicken put it back over the heat and stir until you get that smooth consistency again. When all of the slices have been dipped, ~~eat the rest of the chocolate with a spoon~~ place them in the refrigerator. After the chocolate coating has hardened a bit (15-20 minutes?), cover with plastic wrap and keep refrigerated until it's time to serve.

They are delicious. And halfway healthy. Actually, if you're a believer in the benefits of dark chocolate I'd say you have an excellent argument for totally healthy!

Saturday evening we were with extended family from my mother's side. We're a close bunch, so it's always a guaranteed good time. My mum (who was again the gracious host) specifically asked me to bring this mix of mukimame, peas, and pearl onions. (Cooked over the stove with butter, salt, and pepper, and poured into warm slow cooker for portability.) It was fantastic along side the turkey rolls, sweet potatoes, texas caviar, fresh fruit, and cornbread biscuits. Dessert was a delicious hot fruit dessert (ala mode!) and pumpkin whoopie pies. I'm pretty sure I'm not even remembering everything there was - point being it was a huge spread of mouth watering food.

Sunday evening was spent with my husband's immediate family, hosted by my beautiful sister-in-law. She and her hubby roasted up and carved a turkey with Cajun spices...probably the best turkey I've had in my life, not kidding. I brought a pineapple bacon bites appetizer, chopped salad, and mashed potatoes. I followed the recipes for the salad and potatoes almost exactly and thought they each turned out very nicely. My husband took charge of the bacon bites. He tweaked the recipe a bit by putting them in a 9x13 pan and pouring the brown sugar over the top. He sprinkled cinnamon over the top (genius!) and baked them for 35 minutes. I believe he used the broiler for the last 2 minutes. Let me tell you, they were melt-in-your-mouth! Throw some roasted asparagus, homemade bread, and apple dumplings into the mix...you can imagine how stuffed we were!

Later on Sunday evening we Skyped with my husband's parents, who are missionaries in Africa. It was 3:30am their time, but I think it made the whole evening a little more sweet than bitter to be able to see them and talk with them.

So that wraps up our Thanksgiving weekend. The Christmas gear is coming out this week in our home, and the holiday craziness begins!

What I took : Friday

When I think of Thanksgiving, I don't think in terms of one day. It's more of a four-day marathon, Thursday-Sunday. I have so much family living in close proximity that any given holiday leaves me wishing for more space on the calendar. Even though it makes for a super hectic weekend (and a totally trashed kitchen), I wouldn't trade it. It's a lot of time and oppotunity to soak in all of the things and people I'm most thankful for.

Tonight's celebration was at a cozy lodge in the state park. We got together with my dad's side of the family where there is always great company and lots of laughs. I took two pumpkin cheesecakes (recipe), which almost didn't even happen. Earlier in the day I had just preheated my oven when we lost power to our house. (It was 60 degrees and sunny...I still don't know what was up.) I thought about just throwing in the towel and buying a few pumpkin pies, but what else was I going to do with four packages of cream cheese? Luckily, a friend still had power so I packed up Little Miss, my ingredients, and an electric mixer and set out to borrow an oven. A few hours later we were on our way with this pumpkin goodness!

Still to come: mixed vegetables, pineapple bacon bites, chopped salad, and mashed potatoes.

What I took : Thursday

The other day I shared the recipes for the food dishes I was taking to all of our family get-togethers this weekend. I decided that I'd rather share my own photos of the food and deleted the post. In hind sight I'm not really sure what made me so delete happy and I wish I would have kept it around. Oh well.

So tonight the hubby, Little Miss, and I made the 25 minute trek to my dad and mom's for Thanksgiving. While every holiday spent with my family is great, this particular evening was especially sweet with my brother home from the east coast.

The menu was spinach salad, duck, wild rice, red beets, and grilled garlic toast. (My mouth literally just started watering and I've already eaten it!) We ended on these pumpkin mousse parfaits...recipe from Good Housekeeping, recommended by mi madre and made by muah.

Not super easy, but very delish. Had I not made this recipe I would have never known how easy it is to make your own whipped cream. (Beat 1 c. heavy cream, 1 T. sugar, and 1 t. vanilla until medium peaks form.) It went over well and I would make it again.

Still to come before our Thanksgiving celebrations are over: double layer pumpkin cheesecake, mixed vegetables, pineapple bacon bites, chopped salad, and mashed potatoes.

New Look

What do you do when you can't justify spending money on a blog overhaul? Do it yourself, of course. I rolled up my sleeves and was up to my elbows in html. I even have a little code under my fingernails.

There are several things I'd like to touch up, but it's 2am. I believe the last time I was up this late was New Year's.

20/20 Cure : Days Six, Seven, and Eight

"Robo-Virus" decided to camp out at our house for an entire week (Monday-Sunday!) and last week I was busy with building inventory for a Holiday Bazaar. (Which went awesome, by the way.) I hope some of you can relate when I say that if I had a consecutive 20 minutes go by and I wasn't doing something urgent, I certainly did not want to spend it doing a home cleaning/organization project.

I picked up the 20/20 Home Cure project again on Monday. The tasks were:

Day Six: Surface Clean One Room
Day Seven: Buy Flowers and Sit for 10 Minutes
Day Eight: Establish a Landing Strip

So Monday I had a clean master bedroom (ceiling too!), Tuesday I made a foliage arrangement using pieces of what's left of our landscaping (and literally just sat for 10 minutes), and today I organized our already established "landing strip" (for keys, phones, mail, coats, shoes).

Admittedly, this isn't the most exciting blog venture to date. But I do feel like I'm making more of an effort to go "above and beyond" around the house. So what I'm trying to say is this challenge is for me, not you. Bahaha.
Like I mentioned, yesterday I went on a hunt around the perimeter of our house for something I could call a flower arrangement. When James came home and saw it he said it was festive. Then cautiously asked which tree I hacked to get the greenery - like I've had a history of doing that or something... ;)

Day four : Remove one item and set up outbox. This is not hard for me. I am a very non-sentimental compulsive throw away-er. After watching the video I wasn't sure I would really have much to blog. Things laying around serving no purpose is not the way I roll. However, I got to thinking that between the two of us, James and I have three computers. One of which, gasp!, never gets used. So we had a sit down last night and decided to gift the third computer. As far as an outbox goes? Skipped. The idea of designating a box for the purpose of holding junk that we no longer use is not compatable with my get-rid-of-it brain. Sorry, Maxwell.

Day five : Buy or replenish one eco-cleaner. I have been replacing my regular cleaners for eco-cleaners over the past year. Method brand is the easiest brand to find where I live, and so far I really like it. Last week I bought another bottle of multi-purpose cleaner...so can that count for today's challenge?

If you're like me and would consider that a semi cop-out (after all - I rebelled against an outbox yesterday) I added window cleaner to my list of "to buy" for next week which will replace my non-eco brand that I currently use.

Two more products I'd recommend adding to the ol' cleaning caddy.

I must say, my house so far isn't much cleaner, nor am I getting any richer - but this experience is forcing me to do things I might not have otherwise done. (Wondering what this 20/20 thing is all about? Click here for the 411.)

20/20 : Day One

Day one: Floor and surface clean one room. Done. Check. Easy. But the 20 minute thing? It had me busting my rear to beat the timer. I went two minutes over and realized later that I forgot to dust the top of the art work. Well, regardless, I now have a clean living/dining room that I feel pretty proud of. And I will admit - the adrenaline rush I got from trying to beat the clock felt pretty good.

On a completely unrelated topic, I've been getting traffic from some questionable sources. Because of that fact, I've decided to pull all pictures of Little Miss from the blog and won't be posting any more of her. At least not very often, or until I get that source figured out. It's frustrating, as photography has become a type of art for me, but I just can't get my mommy brain to let it go.

The 20/20 Cure

Hey all...
I just stumbled on something called the 20/20 Home Cure: 20 minutes for 20 days from Apartment Therapy. It's based on the book The Eight Step Home Cure by Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan and he is taking AT readers through the new 20/20 process each day by video. Essentially you get 20 minutes to complete the project he assigns over the course of 20 days. As soon as I watched the first video I immediately decided I was on-board. My house gets the once daily pick-up-the-toys-make-the-bed-throw-dishes-in-dishwasher thing. But I never really put much more than that into "keeping house". The process is geared toward working or otherwise busy people who don't have more than 20 minutes at a time to pay attention to the house. And come on, 20 minutes!?, that's so do-able!

Each day I'll embed the video and blog my experience. Just Monday-Friday, no weekends. Who's with me? Even if you are a day or two behind, I'd still love for you to join along.

The Big 'Two-Five'

My birthday came and went, just like that. No big deal. Boom shacka lacka. And now I'm 25.
James, Little Miss, and I celebrated on Friday evening at an Italian restaurant. Treating myself to the house white is becoming a once-a-year splurge for me; something I may or may not look forward to more than the entree. From there we took a trip to The Fresh Market where I picked up beautiful crisp-white fresh hydrangeas, a dark chocolate bacon bar (insert angels singing), and melt-in-your-mouth raspberry drops.
It was a wonderfully good/normal day. I love that I heard from all the people that matter most, and am totally okay with (completely relived) that the happy birthday tune was not once sung. Now, onward to year 26! What will it bring? I guess we shall see! (Oh dear. With lines like that I must be getting old...)

Pinterest Challenge: Hawaiian Grilled Chicken

For my first Pinterest Challenge post I decided to go easy...no drastic living room change or crazy DIY craft...just good old food. I tried the Hawaiian Grilled Chicken recipe from The Girl Who Ate Everything blog. (It's her picture too.)

This recipe was love at first bite and I'd for sure do it again. The coconut rice was especially amazing. Scroll for the recipe, my changes, and a review from the hubs.

2 cups soy sauce (the soy sauce and water just needs to be a 1:1 ratio)

2 cups water

1 1/2 cups brown sugar
1 bunch of green onions, chopped (reserve some for garnish)
1/4 cup of a white onion, chopped
1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
1 teaspoon of sesame oil
1 (13.5 ounce) can of coconut milk

Note: Jeff says the real key is the soy sauce. Kikomen's is way too salty. He prefers the Aloha Shoyu soy sauce. If you can only find Kikomen at least get the low sodium kind.
Trim chicken thighs of any visible fat. Mix soy sauce, water, brown sugar, onions, garlic, sesame oil, and coconut milk in a large bowl. Marinade chicken for at least 4 hours or overnight to make sure the flavor gets infused.
Grill chicken at a low heat so that the marinade does not burn for 5-7 minutes per side or until done. If you do not have a grill you can use a indoor grill pan.
Serve over a platter of coconut rice and garnish with green onions and a some additional soy sauce.
*Coconut rice can be made by just replacing half of the water in your rice recipe with coconut milk. A trick my SIL told me!"

1. I used chicken breasts. I'm no thigh hater, it's just that the brand I buy didn't have thighs in stock at the time.
2. I further reduced her recipe. I used 1 pound of meat and halved the rest of the ingredients.

The Hubby's review:
Stars: 4.5 of 5
Why not 5 stars: Could have used more onions on top when it was plated. Also, the chicken would have been great kabobed and then mixed in with the rice and garnish onions.

It's 6:30am. I've been awake since maybe 5. Pressure in my ears is making it hard to sleep...fluid or maybe middle ear infection? Who knows. As I'm waiting for my doctor's office phone line to open I am browsing Pinterest...which I posted about here. As of this moment I have 282 pins. That's a lot of pins.

So here's the part where I declare another crazy blogging challege that will probably come to a quiet end in a month or two. You'd think I would have learned by now to stop coming up with these things...I'm blaming it on my current state of sleeplessness.

Inspired by Young House Love's Pinterest challenge I am going to attempt to carry out a pin every one or two weeks. Seriously, 282 pins and I have yet to try any of them. Let me quote Sherry at YHL by saying "stop pinning and start doing".

Okay, so it's 7 now. Baby's stirring and the hubby's alarm just went off. (And I know what you're thinking...it took her 30 minutes to write 13 sentences? Yaaa...I'm a little OCD when it comes to writing.) I will leave you with two quotes I found on...you guessed it...Pinterest. (I'm blaming the espresso references on...again...sleeplessness.)

The hubby, Little Miss, and I ~~survived~~ returned from our first family road trip last night. Today I've been digging myself out of mountains of laundry. It's official: This vacation takes the cake as far as overpacking is concerned. I may have packed the entire nursery into our SUV. Or tried to anyway. Live and learn.

I was excited about posting a few pictures from our Tennessee adventures, but our camera decided to take a swim at Laurel Falls where it eventually drowned and died. Tragic, I know. I think I managed to save the memory card, though, so now I just have to find a different camera. (Maybe now I can finally get that SLR I've always dreamed of!)

Since I have no interesting pictures to post I thought I'd tell you about Pinterest. A virtual tack board where you can "pin" images from websites. The best part is that it also pins the web address so you can always go back to the source. It's kind of like using the "Favorites" part of your internet browser's menu except way more visual.

Remember that Diaper Bag Dilemma post I did awhile back? Well I got to thinking that I never really let you in on what I decided.

The hospital where I delivered Little Miss gives away free* diaper bags to the mommas. I knew this ahead of time and decided to hold off on buying one to see what they had to offer. I'm glad I did! This Cinda B diaper bag is perfect and I would totally buy it if it hadn't been given to me. There are 15 colors to choose from, it's super roomy, and it's really great quality. Dilemma = solved!

When I went back and read the Dilemma post I realized that I had promised a small gift to one of my commenters - oops! In the spirit of better late than never, Random.org generated the number 12...which was Janelle! Congrats Janelle...I'll get something in the mail to you pronto!

Everything they own

I just wanted to take a second to share something that's deeply personal to me. My husband's parents are passionately pursuing God's plan and purpose for their life and are moving to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Africa. They are moving there to "share hope: hope in Homes of Hope for orphans whose mommies have died in premature horrific deaths, hope in the love of Jesus Christ for all including prostitutes, hope for innocent children to escape from exploitation, and eternal hope in a merciful God." We love them and will miss them so much, but we are so excited to see lives changed by the work they are doing. We are continually in awe of how the Spirit is so obviously working in them, and it teaches James and I about passionately pursuing the ways of God more clearly than anything they could ever say.

So dad and mom, we 100% support you and love you as you literally give everything -passions, positions, and possessions- to serve God and His purposes.

The award for biggest blog slacker for the month of February goes to...me. (Slouches in chair.) The award for the most unmotivated blogger for the month of February goes to...yep, me again. (Shrugs shoulders and sighs.)

Baby is due in less than two weeks and that thought alone has been all-consuming. Sometimes in a good way and sometimes in a bad way. Bad way example: emotions ranging from excitement to happiness to fear leave no room in my brain for sleeping. Which I hear will be a precious commodity in the coming weeks. Good way example: I have been having a lot of fun finishing the nursery, savoring date nights with the hubby, and scouring the 'net looking at baby girl fashion. Like this Zara ensemble:

Baby Room Update #3

I think it's safe to say that we have everything we need for when Little Miss arrives. BIG SIGH of relief! You should have seen my lists. You should see the lists I still have, for that matter! But the good news is that the lists I have left are about decorations and cleaning/organization projects. Now I just need to convince myself that alphabetizing the cans in the pantry, polishing the oven racks, and taking a hand-held sweeper to the blinds are not required in order to bring a newborn home. (Okay, so I'm not really alphabetizing cans, but you get the point.)

Anyway, on to the update. I made a flag garland that was easy-peasy to make and I think it's pretty cute. We have plans to put a small shelf under the garland that will be home to a print or two, a small vase, books, etc.

The changing table/dresser is the one that we refinished. It took lots of wood filler, paint, and new hardware but in the end it was a very inexpensive and practical alternative to buying a new changing table.

Somewhere between painting and putting in the flooring we decided to rip out our old shelves/closet system. This new closet system from the Home Depot is much more functional and visually appealing than the old one. And I won't lie, I've had a blast organizing all of her clothes.

Lastly, I bring you to the recliner, my awesome companion. It's been my No. 1 sleeping buddy as of late. Also, you'll notice the addition of Harold, as mentioned in my last post. Personally, I think he looks a little lonely all by himself. I've been tossing around the idea of a mis-matched collage of prints surrounding him.

There are still a few things in the works, like a butterfly mobile I made that is waiting to be hung above the crib. Other things like additional prints and crib sheets (we're using just white for now), are going to wait until I find exactly what I'm looking for - and love. In order to minimize the stress I decided that this room can be a work-in-progress and it won't be the end of the world if it's not decked out by the time she's born. Plus, I don't want to make impulsive decisions that I may regret later.

The Audrey Clutch

Just popping in to let you know:

1.) I listed a couple of Audrey Clutches last week in my Etsy shop. Click here to see them. (Pictures below.)

2.) I've decided to start my maternity leave little early to focus on getting the house and other things ready for baby. So while already-made clutches (available in my shop) will continue to be for purchase, I won't be adding much more to my inventory until after baby. Also, custom orders and orders for bridal parties will be handled on a case-by-case basis, depending on requested turn time and my current work load.

I have been feeling a little overwhelmed with everything and I sometimes forget that no one is going to suffer if I put Lynn David on hold for a couple of weeks. I don't want to get into the habit of making my business a priority over house and family, so thanks for understanding! I still plan to post regularly here on the blog, so keep checking back!

The Crib :: Baby Room Update #2

OH, the crib....

We've come to realize that we have very different "tastes" when it comes to baby room decor. Which is okay. Actually, I'm really thankful I have a spouse who cares enough to have an opinion. It just means a little compromise every once in a while. Luckily we were both able to stay pretty light-hearted and it was good practice for the ol' give-and-take side of marriage.

Here was the predicament:

James had solid, ornate, and stately furniture in mind when he thought of the nursery. Think this:

So here is the compromise. We went with a solid, yet cottage-y looking crib that could be made to look elegant or light-hearted...depending on the bedding.

First, here are a few pictures of the assembly...an event I've been much looking forward to long before pregnancy. :) James did most (okay, all) of the work...while I contemplated bedding options.

SooOOoooOOoooOooo....

I am developing more product. I can't help it. One moment I'm thinking about how awesome linen looks...and the next I'm developing linen clutches! It. Just. Doesn't. Stop. The good news is that I can't sleep anyway (due to baby bump)...so I've had plenty o' time to brainstorm this one.

Here's the newest Lynn David clutch. It's not yet available in the shop for purchase because I'm still working out the kinks and I need to get a price figured out. But it's coming soon. In super delicious colors. :)

I'm loving the envelope style and the heather-y look that linen brings to the table. What do you think?

As I was making this clutch I thought (maybe?) it'd be interesting to share some of my creative process with you. If you could care less, I don't blame you. :) But if you'd like to know, it goes something like this:

I schedule a date with the kitchen table and a cup of tea and start sketching out what I want the bag to look like. Then I scribble out all kinds of measurements and notes with my trusty measuring stick by my side. I didn't keep my notes for this clutch, but it's just as well because they aren't that pretty. Moving on...

I typically have to pump out 3 or 4 "practice" bags before something actually worthy of selling is born.

The first prototype is typically always made with scrap fabric because it NEVER turns out on the first try. This is the most frustrating part of the whole process for me and it can be tempting to just throw in the towel. With this particular clutch I really didn't like the puffiness from the batting and it really needed a magnetic closure of some kind. So notes are taken and I try, try again.

Here's the next prototype. Still the same size and style, minus a layer of batting and plus a magnetic snap closure. Also, I used linen for this one instead of scrap fabric so I could start to get a feel of how it would behave with the iron and sewing machine. But notice how CRAZY crooked my lines are? Linen is actually pretty hard to work with and requires meticulous measuring and cutting. I also noticed that the bag was really floppy. I missed the thickness of the batting, but didn't want the poofiness. So I noted that I needed to try an extra layer of interfacing instead.

Okay, attempt #3 turned out really well. The extra layer of interfacing worked perfectly. Next I needed to figure out what the brooch was going to look like. I tried a rosette, a...something else, and a flower similar to the one used on The Lillian. In the end I really liked the flower and went with it.

This clutch is almost Etsy-worthy. Except for the fact that I wasn't careful while ironing and it left a barely-visible iron mark where the magnetic snap is on the reverse side. SO...I *guess* that means I have to keep it for myself...bummer, huh? :)

Baby Room Update #1

You know, it's amazing how a "due date" can really get you moving on home improvement projects. Especially when it invovles the room your little bambina will be sleeping in. :)

Incase you missed the first post about this room's makeover, here's the mood board that keeps us on track.

Why I didn't take a "before" picture of this room, I don't know. Sorry. The walls were almost the color of the clock pictured in the mood board above, and the carpet was grey. And gross. Back when we had a dog, this was "his room". And the carpets proved it. So we decided to get rid it of it all. After all, this is where our Little Miss will be crawling around on all fours finding things to put in her mouth. The next pictures show the room primed, the trim and carpeting pulled up, and the closet torn out.

Okay, now for the progress. We chose a chestnut-y colored laminate flooring (which we installed ourselves and saved mega buckaroos), painted and re-attached the trim, and painted the walls pink. Some good friends of ours graciously picked up a couple of rugs from IKEA on a recent trip - so those are in the room now too.

The plans:
We still have to go around and touch up the trim where the nail gun and wood filler left it looking not-so-great. The crib and recliner will go in the room soon, and we are in the process of refinishing an old dresser to use as a changing table. After the furniture is in we will be getting a new organizational system for the closet. Curtains and decor will come last.

Writing all this out makes me realize how little time I have to get it all done! :) Hopefully Update #2 will be just around the corner!

Limited Editions

Thanks for the comments on my Diaper Bag Dilemma post from last week. I plan on drawing a name early next week for the special prize, so there's still time to leave me some feedback if you'd like a chance to win.

I realized today that I have yet to introduce you to a few Limited Edition clutches from my shop. The Limited Editions are only being made in limited quantities (to state the obvious). Sometimes only one or two will be available. Here are a few that I've made so far.

I should confess. The Sequin Burst clutch is no longer available in my shop. Because...I'm keeping it. I hand-stitched every single sequin and in the process became quite attached to it. The hand-stitching took way to long for this bag to ever be cost-effective. Plus, I still hadn't added any of the new clutches to my personal collection - and I really love this little beauty.

We are making excellent progress on the baby's room, and I'll post pictures later this week. If you're wondering, no, I havn't forgotten about the latest pictures on the office makeover. (Read about it here and here.) But I will. Promise. There are just a few loose ends that need to be finished up in that room. Speaking of...it's off to do more sanding and painting! Wish me luck! :)

Diaper Bag Dilemma

There are certain baby products that should be researched and analyzed...like carseats. Other things, like diaper bags, should be no-brainers. Just pick one you like, right? Oh, if it were only that easy for a handbag lover.

After dragging this out for waaaay too long, I've decided to bring my dilemma to you, my friends. I need your opinion.

Should I go with a fun, boldly patterned diaper bag, like these from Fossil, J.J. Cole, and Petunia Pickle Bottom?

Or do I go with one that's more versatile and purse-looking so they don't scream "I'm a diaper-bag!". (These bags from Skip Hop are actual diaper bags.)

Or do I keep the hubby in mind and get this Go Gaga sporty-looking bag? (How much is he stuck holding the thing, anyway?)

I know. Please don't be annoyed. I hate that I'm so wishy washy. But will you come to my rescue and tell me which of these you like best/think would be most practical? Leave me a comment with the bag you like most (I've got them numbered) and why. I'll even send a little gift to one commenter drawn at random.

Sometimes I see a picture and I think, "Wow, I have a clutch that could have been in that shot."
Or, "Oh my, I NEED to design a clutch that could be in that shot." Very inspirational.

SO. I am doing a PICTURE {this} series. Which I could almost laugh out loud at that statement because it seems as though everything I announce "I'm going to do!" on this blog almost always fails to be completed.

But at least now you'll know what the world I'm trying to show you when you see a PICTURE {this} every now and again. Which is a clutch or sketch that just "goes" with a particular photo I've come across and a caption describing the whole scene. Here's the first:

The Sophia {a personal favorite}

I'm really excited about the new look, and I think Brooke F. is the bee's knees when it comes to logo design. The Lillian is made with dupioni silk, which gives this clutch a lustrous sheen and beautiful texture from the silk's characteristic small slubs. The Lillian features a permanently attached floral brooch made with dupioni silk and netting. The fabric for each brooch is hand cut, so no two are the same. Colors being offered are white, ivory, and black with more color options to come.

Approximate measurements are 8.5" wide across the bottom, 4" high, and 2" deep. Each brooch is different, but they typically measure an average of 2.5-3".

I can't help but be thankful to my King for everything he's blessed my life with this past year. My entire life I've been given health, wealth (considering the plight of poverty for most of the world's population), and opportunity - to name just a few. Specifically, though, among so many other things, Lynn David's been blessed with success and growth. Only One deserves the glory for that- and it's certainly not me.

The first week of the New Year I will be introducing you to Lynn David's new products (you can see some of them right now by clicking here), but I wanted to make sure that I gave credit where it's due before that happened. God's given me a vision and talent for this business, and I'm fully aware that He could and has a full right to take it away at any moment. I'm humbled He's trusted me with this and, succeed or fail, I want it all to be to His glory.

Christmas Caramels Recipe

Christmas Caramels

2 1/4 c. brown sugar
1 c. light corn syrup
1 (14oz) can sweetened condensed milk
1 c. butter, unsalted
1 t. vanilla

Line a 10x15" baking sheet with parchment paper, making sure the paper goes up the sides as well.

Cut butter into small cubes and melt over low heat in a medium sized sauce pan. Add and mix brown sugar, corn syrup, and condensed milk. Cook and stir on medium high heat until boiling. Reduce heat to medium, or a temperature that allows for a steady, moderate boil. Using a candy thermometer, let your caramel heat to 244F (maybe 30 minutes or so), stirring constantly. Remove from pan as soon as the temperature reaches 244F and stir in vanilla. Pour the caramel into the prepare baking sheet. Allow to cool and use a pizza cutter to slice into 1x2" peices. Makes 75 peices. Wrap each peice in wax paper.

Put them in box with other Christmas treats, add a little string and tags, and give!

Their separated rubber soles and soft leather body make them uber comfy. Not to mention they cost just 40 bucks (I bought mine online during a 20% off sale...score!) and they come in nine - count 'em - nine colors.

What's that? You have high arches and can't wear flats? I hear you -I've got miserably high arches too...but these babys aren't your everyday ballets.

Two tips if you plan on buying: buy a 1/2 size up and give yourself about 3 wears to break in the backs. (The tops of my heels were a little sore but now I don't notice a thing.)

Hello friends! Just popping in for an update. (Someday my blog won't be reduced to me just occasionally popping in for updates. But for now it is what it is.)

It's hard to believe that in just a few weeks I'll be saying adios to my office job to start my new life as a stay at home mom. It's a transition that has me just a little freaked out at the moment, but I'm looking forward to it none-the-less. With this transition just around the corner, I'm realizing that I need to start getting serious about Baby Girl's room (and about a million other things-including Lynn David).

I'm a list person. I have to have things written out and visualized or I get super wishy-washy and overwhelmed. So I started a mood board for her room. It has helped SOOOO much! It started with a visit to Kuler to get my color scheme going. And that got the ball rolling. Here's what I've got so far:

So what do you think? I was a little shocked to see a certain theme going...butterflies!? Not sure where that came from - we'll see if those little critters actually end up finding their way into her room. If you see anything on the web that "goes" with Baby Girl's room don't be shy! There's something about this picture that just beckons me to stop and take it in. I just stare at it. Maybe because it makes me want to go throw on a taffeta dress and join them on their stroll. Room Update

Quick room update! The process has been slow, but I'm really happy that I havn't lost steam...yet. :) I'm chalking that up to baby hormones. The trim has been painted and the walls have been primed. It feels so fresh already!

I've mentioned before that we really love us some good house plants. They're just so...friendly-like. I don't know, you probably have to be a houseplant owner to understand. :b The bad news is that the bottom of our pots were really putting a cramp in our windowsill's style. It permanently put chips and stains in the old paint job. Luckily, I'm not too bad these days with a sewing machine and made two pads to go on the window sill. I snapped a few shots but I think they'll look better in a picture when the room is complete. So this is a "to be continued". (I know, you're on the edge of your seat aren't you?)

In other news, we are finding out tomorrow (TOMORROW!) if baby is a bambino/bambina. *wild cheers!* Any guesses? I actually havn't the slightest, I'm just ready to know!

And in other, other news (nice segway, huh?) I'm sitting on about 12 yards of unbelievably luxurious black dupioni silk. I've got about 6 yards of white and ivory on the way. My new line of formal and bridal clutches is actually moving forward and I couldn't be happier! I really hope to launch before baby comes, so things will start materializing soon. Stay tuned!

The Name Game - Mini Giveaway

Nope, not talking about baby names - though we'll take all the help we can get in that department.

I've been tossing around the idea of naming the different styles of bridal clutches when my new line comes out. But I need your opinion. Do you think it's cute/cool when companies name their products (i.e. The Celia; The Ashbury). Or when you see that pair of shoes named "Alice Pumps" do you think cheese city?

I want your honest opinion. Personally, I've been leaning towards not handing out name cards to my products. But I'm still on the fence and want the opinion of the consumer.

Weddings. + Clutches.

Kind of the rave these days. It's been 90% of my business over the past 6+ months. I've been itching to change up my product line. Although this isn't necessarily the direction I had originally intended, I think I'm gonna go for it. I plan to start offering exclusively wedding clutches, and the designs will be me. Starting with the feather plume. What would I want on a clutch if I were giving them to my bridesmaids? A feather plume. Done deal.

Stay tuned...I've got a few more custom orders to finish up before I really get going on this. But you'll be the first to see the latest.

Big Project

I'll be the first to admit that I make an awful lot of excuses when it comes to why my inventory is so low. But once I tell you about my mega-huge project, I think you'll understand. I've been working on this project for most of the summer, and although it's been the most exciting project I've ever taken on, it hasn't been entirely fun. See, it's caused me to spend about every free moment either napping or eating saltine crackers...oh, did I just give it away?

Yep...the big project is baby!

I'm 12 weeks to the day today, so as I begin to fade out of this first trimester I *plan* to pick up the sewing a bit more. If you all are like everyone else I've talked to, I'm sure you have lots of questions. Here are the basics:

Due date: March 19, 2011
Morning sickness: More like all day queasiness, but it's not been horrible.
Finding out the gender: Yes...and we'll tell. :)
Names: We've got a list, but we'll work on narrowing it down once boy/girl has been determined.
Any gender hopes: Honestly and truly, no. Not at this point anyway. We're just too excited for it to matter.
Stay at home momma: More like work at home momma. I plan to focus quite a bit on Lynn David.

There are a lot of things I've griped about in the early stages of pregnancy, but one thing that has James and I absolutely fascinated is the development of our little one. We go to Baby Center every Saturday morning and see the latest and greatest news about our little one. This week's highlights: the baby starts moving its fingers and toes, can grimace, and its mouth will start making sucking movements. So fun!

Since I began making handbags it's been almost impossible for me to justify actually buying one for myself. I feel like I should be a walking advertisement at all times for my company. After all, what do I say if someone asks if I made the bag I'm carrying if it's actually one I bought? BUT. All of that is about to change. I follow one of my favorite fabric/purse pattern designers' blog and guess what I spotted? Heather Bailey carrying a bag NOT made with one of her bright, colorful fabric prints. I was beside myself when I saw this. Doesn't everyone living in her Arizona town know she makes bags, not to mention her own fabric? So I decided that if Heather Bailey's got the guts to carry a store-bought bag around town, I can certainly justify purchasing a bag for myself. (Image via Heather Bailey.)

That room...

I've decided to take on a room that I've never had much luck with. This time I've resolved that it's all or nothing. I'm going all out on this, and I'm excited to document it on my blog.

I've been super inspired lately by Young House Love, a DIY blog where Sherry and John show the ins and outs of revamping their first home. They also offer daily advice and ideas for taking on projects around the home. So with all the resources offered by YHL, I plan on making over this room and LOVING it afterwards.

Here are my before pics and a few of my plans:

(Please excuse the poor quality coming from my point-and-shoot. A Nikon D3000 is on the birthday wish-list this year!)

What's changing:
-Wall Color (going gray)
-Trim Color (bistro white)
-Computer Desk (buying new from Ikea)
-Computer Chair (something on rollers)
-Closet function (more on this later)
-Wall Decor (my biggest struggle)

What's staying:
-James' Exercise Eqip. (thumbs down but that's the way it is)
-Computer and Equip.
-Flooring
-Window Treatments

Here are the wall and trim colors and the colors I'd like to accent with around the room. Note...the greens and blues are not going on the wall. I just have them so they will inspire me when looking for organizational assessories and wall art.

As with all projects like this, I'm always super excited to plan and start - then majorly lose steam about 1/4 of the way into it. That being said I've not given myself a timeline to get all of this done. Let's just hope it doesn't take 6 months like the it did the last time we decided to paint this room. :) Wish me luck!

Summer Grillin'

Thank goodness for grills. It makes planning meals during summer so much easier. James and I use the grill probably 2-3 times a week during the summer/fall months. I love trying new marinades and recipes and he is a pro on the grill. Here are two of our favorite burger recipes this summer:

Apple Bacon Burgers

Ingredients:

1/2 lb. bulk Italian sausage

1/2 lb ground beef

2 small green apples

2 Tbsp. mayonnaise

1 Tbsp. Dijon-style mustard

1 tsp. honey

4 Kaiser rolls, split and toasted

6 slices bacon (crisp-cooked)

Directions:

Cook bacon until crisp. Drain on paper toweling.

Core and finely chop one of the apples; combine in a large mixing bowl with beef and sausage. Shape into 4, 1/2-inch thick patties. Grill directly over medium-high heat for 4 to 5 minutes per side or until no pink remains. Meanwhile in a small bowl combine mayonnaise, mustard, and honey. Core and slice remaining apple. To assemble the burgers, layer apple slices and grilled burgers on the toasted bun bottoms. Top each with one and a half slices bacon. Spread a generous layer of the mayonnaise mixture on the cut side of bun tops before placing atop burgers. Makes 4 servings.

Terrific Teriyaki Burgers

Ingredients:

1/4 cup ketchup

2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce

1 tablespoon brown sugar

1 tablespoon unsweetened crushed pineapple

1-1/2 teaspoons minced fresh gingerroot

1 garlic clove, minced

1/2 teaspoon sesame oil

1 egg white, lightly beaten

1/3 cup dry bread crumbs

3 green onions, chopped

2 tablespoons unsweetened crushed pineapple

3/4 pound ground beef

3/4 pound lean ground turkey

6 slices unsweetened pineapple

6 hamburger buns, split and toasted

6 lettuce leaves

6 slices tomato

Directions

In a small bowl, combine the ketchup, soy sauce, brown sugar, pineapple, ginger, garlic and sesame oil; set aside. In a large bowl, combine the egg white, bread crumbs, onions, crushed pineapple and 3 tablespoons reserved ketchup mixture. Crumble beef and turkey over mixture and mix well. Shape into six burgers. Grill burgers, covered, over medium heat or broil 4 in. from the heat for 5-7 minutes on each side or until a meat thermometer reads 165° and juices run clear, brushing occasionally with remaining ketchup mixture. Grill or broil pineapple slices for 2-3 minutes on each side or until heated through. Serve burgers and pineapple on buns with lettuce and tomato. Yield: 6 servings.

Where have I been? I'm not really sure. It's amazing how sometimes I feel like I just updated my blog...then I go check and it's been more than a week! And I know I skipped an I Love Friday. This week I've comitted to not sewing a single stitch. A vacation of sorts. My house needs attention. My hubby needs attention. And I'd imagine my poor sewing machine needs some TLC. So that's what I'm doing this week. Next week I plan on dealing with the ridiculous mound - make that mounds - of fabric I have. I think I'll have a destash sale. Make grab bags of fabric available at a discount. I've got some plans for other projects. So we'll see what happens. After I've destashed I've got big ideas for this company. But first I need to do a lot of brainstorming. We'll talk more about that later.

Just taking a quick break from the machine to say hello! It's been a busy Tuesday! I've got 17 clutches to finish in the next couple of weeks, so I've been hitting it hard lately. I LOVE it though! I have so much fun meeting different people and working with so much lovely fabric. Remember this map post? It's filling up! So far I've got bags in 22 states with the most representation from sunny California. Hello west coast! I get so excited over stuff like that. :) Anyway, I just took a shot of my desk/work area. I have a feeling it won't be getting much more organized than this over the next few weeks. (Aren't these colors pretty? We're using the same fabric as the groomsmen's ties!)

Memorial Day weekend here in the midwest was nothing short of hot. For the hubby and I it was a weekend filled with family, friends, grilling, and a glorious Saturday afternoon on a pontoon boat at the lake. A lovely reminder that summer is just three short weeks away. In my opinion this is most definately cause for celebration. How better to celebrate than with a Lynn David Handbag giveaway on the first day of summer?

Belt It

While I truly love making bags, I could go insane doing it for hours on end. I like a little variety every now and then. And it just so happens that I was on the verge of insanity today. So I decided to make a belt. Apparently insanity was already beginning to take over, because don't know the first thing about making belts...or even how I wanted it to look. Lucky for me I work best when I'm "winging it", and I don't think it turned out too badly. I don't know if I'd actually even wear this anywhere, but at least it was something different to do for a while. And I won't lie, it was fun. :)

On a different note, a few of you noticed my tweet the other day about the cooking class I went to at Williams-Sonoma. Let me tell you, it was fabulous! The theme was "Cooking from the Farmers' Market", based on the cookbook they sell in the store. I learned how to make things like arugula mint pesto, a strawberry dessert using greek yogurt, and many more amazing dishes. If you're interested in classes just call the Williams-Sonoma retail store closest to your area. They have lots of differently themed classes throughout the summer. I'll definately be going back. Speaking of going back, it's back to the sewing machine for me! Hope you all have an amazing holiday weekend!

Air Plants

Meet the newest additions to our ever-growing collection of houseplants. We have 13 now, to be exact. Not counting the steady stream of fresh cut blooms that grace the kitchen table this time of year.

These are air plants. And they are super black-thumb friendly. Seriously. No dirt required. You can even glue them to things. Mine happen to like their little box full of decorative stones and prefer a mist with a spray bottle every day or two. They also enjoy a good soak under the kitchen faucet every now and again, but I'm lazy and they're forgiving. We get along well.

I've run out of things to say.

Okay, you're right. That would never happen. The more appropriate phrase would be "I've run out of things to say on this blog". I guess that's not entirely true either. There are some things I could talk about. So if you'll allow me to ramble...

I've been incredibly busy with custom orders lately. The word "incredibly" is subjective here. I mean, it's not insane. Just busy. (Which reminds me, I don't think I ever mentioned that I'm now taking custom orders. To read up on it click here. Or click the little "Custom" tab at the top of the page.) Since I've been busier than usual I've not been able to do anything with my new fabric. I know I promised pictures of it made up into a pleated little clutch, but for now it's on the backburner...seemingly indefinately. The world will keep spinning, I know, but it just sits there are calls my name every time I walk by.

On a personal note, I've taken a little interest in letterpress. It only fuels the fire now that Letterpress Week is going on over at one of my favorite blogs oh, hello friend. There's just something about the texture and unique-ness of letterpress. It's so visually appealing, and the process is quite an art. If I didn't already have so many irons in the fire I could see myself taking this up as a hobby.

Hopefully my next few posts will be a little more interesting. I have ideas, but they all require pictures which I just don't have time for at the moment. (Photography doesn't come easy for this amateur.)

Pizza Made Over

Okay, I'll be the first one to admit that if you're craving a deep dish, stuffed crust, sausage-loaded pizza this version probably isn't for you. On the other hand, if you're a little more health-conscious or just feel like having a lighter version of that good old pizza pie every now and then, you might want to give this a try.

Before I go any further, I need to give credit where credit is due. My mom served this pizza for lunch last week for my sister and I. I'm absolutely in love with it...so thanks, mom!

You need:
1 thin pizza crust
tomato sauce (or pizza sauce...but tomato sauce works)
parmesan cheese
pepperoni
cucumber (sliced very thin)
baby spinach
italian seasonings and/or dried basil

Sometimes I wish I had an off button for that "dreamer" part of my brain. It's a part of my brain that never stops, keeping me up at night and distracting me at my "day" job. It's convenient when I need an excuse to take a break from housework...but then again, housework has found its way to the bottom of my priority list these days. It's a curse really. These gears that just don't stop turning. Or God's gift that keeps me fresh and motivated in the oversaturated purse making business. Regardless, it feels like a curse.

Which brings me to something I've been excited about...that truly has kept me up at night. I've been experimenting with fabric design in order to keep my bags truly original. The direction I'd like to move (think very long term) is towards nautical. Think sailing. Oceans. Yachts. Sailors. With Class. Think Nautica meets J. Crew. Or Tommy Hilfiger meets Ann Taylor. Very much my taste.

Anyway, I ordered my first sampling of fabric that I created on my computer. Just plain navy stripes. But it's a start. If anything, I wanted just to see how it all worked. Ordering the fabric, I mean. It turned out just exactly the way I wanted it. I'm hoping to turn this into a cute pleated clutch soon, and I'll promise to take pictures. :)

When Etsy's treasuries (a member-curated shopping gallery of handpicked items) falls below 333 lists, the floor opens up for anyone to create one. It's kind of an art of timing, but I finally was able to snag one! By "snag" I mean claiming a list, then browsing all of Etsy-land to find items that coordinate or have a similar theme. I'm feeling somewhat sunshiney today, so my theme is "Have some sunshine...". A lot of times the galleries you see on Etsy's front page come from these treasuries. I have my fingers crossed!

Mapping It Out

As mentioned in this post, I really have fun with the idea of national and international shipping. In order to give myself a visual of all the places Lynn David bags are being carried around, I bought a really big map of the U.S. and am using pins to mark each location a bag has been shipped. I'd love to someday have a presence in all 50 states. Progress: 14 down, 36 to go!

Last week I was browsing the local big box discount store in search of assessories to adorn my newly purchased cork board. I had in mind something colorful, and just a little different. Something unique to me and my personal taste in office assessories. Needless to say I was frustrated with the selection. What was I doing at a discount grocery store looking for a one-of-a-kind find, anyway? So I committed to make them myself. After browsing Etsy for a little inspiration, I made these fabric covered push pins that go great with the "theme" that's slowly taking form in my office. Not to mention the fact that I was able to use up a little more of my ridiculously large mound of scrap fabric. These were so fun to make I'm considering making more for a fun giveaway. :) We'll see. My poor shop needs fresh inventory - which will hopefully happen soon.

Vacation Day

It's so hard for me to throw away even the smallest amount of scrap fabric. Why, you ask? Well, to state the obvious, it's gorgeous fabric. But the more practical reasons are because the fabric is rather pricey, and it's never a bad idea to practice greener habits -- it's best not to throw away more than you have to. So that's the story behind these cute little dudes.

My goal is to list at least 10 of these per week, so keep checking back at the shop for more.

Pens, Pencils, and Sharpies

I lose pens, pencils, and Sharpies like it's going out of style. Or, just maybe, there is some kind of magical pixie dust in my sewing room that allows them to grow legs and walk. I can imagine some obscure, dark corner of my sewing room that comes alive at night with dozens of writing tools throwing a party.

Since it's far more likely that I'm misplacing them, I recycled a tea bag container and some scrap fabric and made a little pencil holder. My pens finally have a happy home!

Inside-Out Cabbage Rolls Recipe

Don't judge. This recipe packs a full punch of flavor and even a little heat. You don't even have to like cabbage to enjoy it. It comes (slightly tweaked here) from my new Healthy Cooking cookbook, which is loaded with hundreds of seriously amazing recipes. Picture is from Taste of Home.

Inside-Out Cabbage Rolls
half lb. lean ground beef or ground turkey
1 small onion, chopped
1 small green pepper, chopped
half head of cabbage, chopped
1 can (10 oz.) Rotel tomatoes
1 cup beef broth
4 oz. pizza sauce
1 cup cooked brown rice

1. In a dutch oven or large pot, cook the beef, onion and green pepper over medium heat until the meat is no longer pink.
2. Stir in the cabbage, tomatoes, broth and pizza sauce. Bring mixture to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 20-25 minutes or until cabbage is tender, stirring occasionally.
3. Stir in rice; heat through. Salt to taste.
